Embodiment Construction

[0022] Data security and transaction integrity are critical to businesses and consumers. This need is growing as electronic transactions constitute an increasing share of commercial activity and malicious actors are becoming more rampant in their attempts to undermine the security of transactions.

[0023] Embodiments of the present disclosure provide a system, method and apparatus for multi-factor authentication of transactions received at a client device using a personal identification number (PIN) in conjunction with a contactless card.

[0024] The contactless card may include a substrate including a memory that stores one or more applets, a counter value, and one or more keys. In some embodiments, the memory may also store a PIN that controls the use of the contactless cards described herein. In one embodiment, the counter value can be used to generate a unique password that can be used to authenticate contactless card transactions. A password can be used in conjunction...

Abstract

A two factor PIN based authentication system and method authenticates a client using a password provided by a contactless card associated with the client in combination with a PIN stored by the contactless card. In some embodiments, cryptographic authentication may be preconditioned by a PIN match determination by a contactless card. In other embodiments, the password may be formed using, at least in part, a personal identification code (PIN) stored on the contactless card, encoded using a dynamic key stored by the contactless card, and uniquely associated with the client. Authentication may be accomplished by comparing a password formed using a PIN to an expected password generated using an expected PIN and an expected dynamic key.

Description

[0001] Related applications [0002] This application claims priority to US Patent Application Serial No. 16 / 725,133, filed December 23, 2019, entitled "CONTACTLESS CARD PERSONAL IDENTIFICATION SYSTEM." The contents of the aforementioned applications are incorporated herein by reference in their entirety. Background technique [0003] Credit card cloning or "skimming" is a technique by which malicious actors copy credit card information from the credit card associated with an account onto a counterfeit card. Cloning is typically performed by sliding a credit card through a skimmer to extract ("skimming") the credit card information from the card's magnetic strip and store the information on the counterfeit card. The counterfeit card could then be used to charge the account. [0004] EMV (originally Europay, Mastercard, Visa) defines standards for the use of smart payment cards and terminals and ATMs that accept them. [0005] EMV cards are smart cards (ie, chip cards or IC ...
