Embodiment Construction

[0024] Figure 1 shows a video signal receiver system for adaptively generating a program representative data stream in user-selectable, encrypted or non-encrypted form, according to the present invention. Although the disclosed system is described in the context of an MPEG-compatible system for receiving an MPEG-encoded transport stream representing a broadcast program, it is by way of example only. The principles of the present invention can also be used with other types of systems including non-MPEG compliant systems employing other types of encoded data streams. Also, while the disclosed system is described as performing broadcast programming, there is only one demonstration. The term 'program' is used to denote any form of packaged data, such as telephone messages, computer programs, Internet data or other communications.

[0025] In general terms, in the video signal receiver system of FIG. 1 , a carrier wave modulated with video data is received by antenna 10 and proces...

Abstract

A decoder (25) excludes an encryption code or key from decrypted or non-encrypted program output data. Decrypted program representative data is generated (33, 35) from an input datastream containing encrypted program data and an associated encryption code. The encrypted program data is decrypted (130, 33, 50) using the encryption code to provide decrypted program data. An output datastream is formed containing the decrypted program data but excluding the encryption code. The encryption code may be excluded by substituting (110, 55, 60, 115) non-encryption code data for the encryption code. The output datastream may also contain ancillary data formed (115) to support decoding of the decrypted program data.

Description

technical field [0001] This invention relates to digital signal processing, and more particularly to conditional access processing, decoding, and formatting of encrypted packet data for storage, for example, by subscriber broadcast receivers, satellite or cable television material. Background technique [0002] In video processing and storage applications, digital video data is often encoded to conform to the requirements of a known standard. One such widely adopted standard is the MPEG2 (Motion Pictures Experts Group) picture coding standard, hereinafter referred to as the "MPEG standard". The MPEG standard includes a system encoding part (ISO / IEC 13818-1, June 10, 1994) and a video encoding part (ISO / IEC 13918-2, January 20, 1995), which are hereinafter respectively referred to as "MPEG system standards" and "MPEG Video Standard". Video data encoded to the MPEG standard is in the form of a packetized data stream, usually comprising the data content of many program channe...
