Problems solved by technology

In particular, making nozzles or air caps work efficiently and economically is often complex to design and therefore expensive to produce
Furthermore, even when generating and expelling extremely fine spray particles, it is difficult to control and direct these particles in a suitable manner, such as forming a well-defined, relatively broad, flattened jet shape

Embodiment Construction

[0024] The present invention is susceptible to various changes, and some optional structures of the illustrated embodiments are shown in the accompanying drawings and will be described in detail below. It should be understood, however, that there is no intention to limit the invention to the particular forms described, but on the contrary, the invention is to cover all modifications, alternative constructions, and equivalents falling within the spirit and scope of the invention.

[0025] With particular reference now to Fig. 1, there is shown an air assist nozzle assembly 10 embodying the present invention. The nozzle assembly 10 uses a pressurized gas, such as air, to pressure atomize the liquid into very fine particles to maximize surface area. While the invention has been described in connection with a particular illustrated nozzle assembly, it should be understood that the invention is equally applicable to nozzles of other configurations.

Abstract

An air assisted nozzle assembly including an air cap to efficiently generate a wide flat spray shape with relatively low air flow and pressure with enhanced comminution of liquid particles. The air cap has a pair of longitudinally extending air passages on opposite sides of the central liquid stream discharge opening. Each air passage has a discharge opening defined by downstream lateral deflection flanges and closely spaced, inwardly directed, tapered deflection surfaces which together direct and deflect the charge air flow inwardly toward the Discharged liquid flow, thereby atomizing the liquid flow, directing it into a predetermined spray shape.

Description

[0001] This application is a continuation-in-part of US Patent Application No. 09 / 30746, filed June 11, 1999, the specification of which is incorporated by reference. technical field [0002] This invention relates generally to air assisted nozzles, and more particularly to an improved air cap for an air assisted nozzle assembly for increased liquid particle breakup and enhanced spray distribution control. Background technique [0003] In many spray applications, such as humidification or evaporative cooling, it is desirable to produce relatively small spray particles in order to maximize their distribution area. Accordingly, it is known to use air assisted nozzle assemblies in which a pressurized gas, such as air, is used to comminute or atomize a liquid stream into very small liquid particles. For example, in some air-assisted nozzle assemblies, the liquid is first pulverized mechanically within an atomization chamber located upstream of the nozzle assembly's nozzle or air...
