Embodiment 1

[0030] composition preparation

[0031] Monensin sodium crystals (purity 92.7%) were air milled. The air milling apparatus used is conventional, where the crystals are directed into a high velocity air stream that transports the crystals with high turbulence to the impingement and sorting chamber. The crystal size is reduced by interparticle impact and friction. The reduced size particles are discharged, while the oversized particles are retained for further grinding. After grinding, the particle size distribution of the monensin is as follows:

[0032] Particle size (micron) % of samples smaller than the marked size

[0033] 1.09 5

[0034] 1.68 10

[0035] 3.45 25

[0036] 7.20 50

[0037] 22.34 90

[0038] 28.46 95

[0039] 52.50 100

[0040] 172.6 kg of ground crystals were mixed with 27.4 kg of sodium lauryl sulfate (technical grade) in a mixer to obtain a composition containing 80% monensin sodium and 13.7% sodium lauryl sulfate.

Embodiment 2

[0043] Effect on hide quality

[0044] The composition prepared in Example 1 was suspended in water at various concentrations under agitation. The newly obtained hides are then soaked in tanks (tanks) containing various suspensions. The other new hides were sprayed (sprayed) with about 3 liters of each suspension per hide. The monensin-treated hides were then stored in stacks at room temperature.

[0045] The hides preserved with monensin treatment were evaluated at different times with reference to the parameters commonly used in the subjective assessment of hide quality, such as lint, odor, and color. These indicators were compared with hides that had not been sterilized but stored at freezing temperatures (1), and with treated hides stored under the same conditions as untreated hides (2).

[0046] The results are shown in Table 1.

Embodiment 3

[0063] Effect on hide quality

[0064] At the concentrations stated in Table 2, as in Example 2, the freshly obtained hides were either immersed in the suspension of the composition containing the preserved hides (tank) or sprayed with the suspension (spray). The monensin-treated hides were again stored in stacks at room temperature.

[0065] Quality parameters of treated hides were compared with frozen, untreated hides. The results are listed in Table 2.

Abstract

Compositions containing polyether antibiotics having reduced particle size and surface-acting agents are useful for protecting untanned animal hides against decomposition for up to 96 hours when stored at ambient temperature. Further processing of treated hides presents no environmental hazards. The present invention is useful in the preservation of hide quality of a wide variety of animals useful for tanning.

Description

Background of the invention [0001] The present invention relates to compositions and methods for preserving animal hides, especially for preventing degradation of animal hides caused by microbial growth. [0002] Animal hides received by tanners in good condition can be used as valuable finished products and sell for higher prices than hides of lower quality. However, freshly peeled hides are usually washed and stored before reaching the tannery; during this process, such hides are susceptible to microbial breakdown. Microorganisms growing on and within the hide and in the blood vessels can cause irreparable damage, resulting in lower quality hides of reduced value. Damaged hides have holes or darkened areas that reduce hide strength and alter elongation. Shedding, color, and integrity are all measures of hide quality that can be adversely affected by microbial growth. [0003] Various agents have been used to maintain hide quality, but the use of these agents has produced ...
