Embodiment Construction

[0062] Figure 7 A first embodiment of the invention is shown above. The shown turbo decoding device comprises a conventional turbo decoder (70), which can be Figure 4a , any turbo encoder shown in 4b, 5 or 6. For simplicity, it is assumed that the elementary decoder used is of the LogAPP type, although any other type of elementary decoder could be used.

[0063]The switch (78) is first switched to the input terminal, and the device receives the input information to be decoded from the demodulator, represented by a set of initial weighted values. The input information is provided to a turbo decoder (70). The turbo-decoded information is transmitted to an error detector (71) controlling a second switch (72). The second switch diverts the decoded information to the output (73), if the turbo decoded information is error-free, otherwise, sends the decoded information to the turbo encoder corresponding to the turbo decoder. The error messages are then re-encoded by the turbo ...

Abstract

The present invention generally relates to a method of improving turbo decoding by recoding erroneous information and subtracting their effects at the input of a turbo decoder. The reduction of this effect corrects the observed difficulty in converging or convergence to wrong solutions in some configurations of turbo decoding. The present invention is equally well suited for parallel cascaded turbo decoding, serial cascaded turbo decoding, or block turbo decoding. Several embodiments are given according to the type of feedback envisaged.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention generally relates to methods of decoding turbo-encoded information. More specifically, the present invention relates to improvements in decoding methods when they are difficult to converge. Background technique [0002] Turbo codes are currently emerging as the most efficient error-correcting codes because they yield the lowest possible bit error rate for a given signal-to-noise ratio among existing codes, and have reasonable decoding complexity. They can be used for continuous digital transmission, or for frame-by-frame transmission. [0003] Turbo codes were developed by C.Berrou, A.Glavieux and P.Thitimajshima in the title "Near Shannon Limit Error-Correcting Coding and Decoding: Turbo-codes (close to Shannon's limit error correction coding and decoding: turbo codes)", ICC -1993Conference Proceedings, pp.1064-1070 paper proposed. Turbo codes subsequently became the subject of many developments, and today the term "turbo code...
