Embodiment 1

[0120] Example 1: Treatment of dementia with mifepristone

[0121] The following examples illustrate studies that demonstrated that the methods of the present invention are effective in the treatment of dementia.

[0122] Research Background

[0123] The study demonstrates that administration of the glucocorticoid receptor (GR) antagonist mifepristone at a daily dose of approximately 200 mg is an effective treatment for slowing cognitive decline in the early stages of Alzheimer's disease.

[0124] patient choice

[0125] Patients in this study were diagnosed with early Alzheimer's disease using subjective and objective criteria, including those proposed by the National Institute of Neurological Diseases and Stroke (NINCDS) and DSM-IV described above. Mer's disease. All patients gave written consent to a protocol certified by the Human Subjects Committee at Stanford University Medical Center.

[0126] Only patients diagnosed with Alzheimer's dementia and confirmed by two ps...

Abstract

The present invention relates generally to the field of psychiatry. Specifically, the present invention relates to the discovery that drugs that inhibit the binding of cortisol to its receptors can be used to treat dementia. The potent glucocorticoid receptor antagonist mifepristone can be used in these methods. The present invention also provides a kit for treating human dementia, which kit includes a glucocorticoid receptor antagonist and instructional materials indicating the indications, dosage and regimen of the glucocorticoid receptor antagonist.

Description

[0001] Related Application Cross Documentation [0002] This application is US Provisional Application No. filed on May 15, 1998. 60 / 085,703 of the PCT application. The foregoing application is hereby incorporated by reference in its entirety for all purposes. field of invention [0003] The present invention relates generally to the field of psychiatry. In particular, the present invention relates to the discovery that drugs that inhibit the binding of cortisol to its receptors are useful in the treatment of dementia. Background of the invention [0004] Dementia is the loss of the ability to think and remember. The disease affects thousands of individuals, especially older adults, and is becoming more common as the population ages. Usually, this loss of cognitive skills and memory is slow and progressive over months or years. To date there is no effective treatment that stops, slows or reverses this process. [0005] What causes dementia is a matter of debate, and ma...
