Embodiment Construction

[0015] In the system shown in FIG. 1 , the three-phase mixture in a slurry reactor 1 (sometimes referred to as a bubble column reactor) flows into an overflow conduit 2 and then into a vertical separation conduit 3 . The gas bubbles in the gas separation duct flow upwards into the reactor outlet duct 4 . In this separation duct, the liquid phase and the solid catalyst particles flow down into the duct 5 which extends along the cylindrical dynamic settler 6 for about 80% of the settler height. The slurry is discharged through line 5 as a free jet flowing into the outlet hole of the settler and then returned to the reactor via line 7 . Since the catalyst particles (which are much denser than wax) must reverse direction in order to flow upwards in this annular region, the annular region 8 surrounding the pipe 5 contains wax substantially free of catalyst particles. A valve 9 located at the top of the settler 6 controls the rate of wax removal from the settler. Flow through the ...

Abstract

Catalyst particles are separated from the wax in a reactor slurry reactor by feeding a portion of the slurry to a dynamic settler. Heavier catalyst particles settle and are removed as the slurry at the bottom of the settler is recycled back to the reactor. Clarified wax is removed at the top of the settler. A multi-channel baffle prevents turbulence, improving retention of the desired heavier catalyst particles.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to a method for suspending catalyst powder in a liquid. Background technique [0002] In a slurry reactor, for example, where a mixture of hydrogen and carbon dioxide reacts over a powdered catalyst to form liquid hydrocarbons and waxes, the slurry is kept constant by continuously or intermittently removing the wax from the reactor concentration. The catalyst in wax must be separated from the slurry and then returned to the reactor where a constant amount of catalyst is maintained. In order to keep catalyst loss within the rate of replacement due to deactivation, the wax removed from the system must contain no more than 0.5% by weight of catalyst. [0003] Several devices have been suggested for separating catalyst from wax, including centrifuges, vortex sintered metal filters, wire mesh filters, and magnetic separators. Centrifuges cannot reduce the catalyst concentration below about 1%, and are complex, expensive, and...
