Embodiment Construction

[0016] In the following description, for purposes of illustration and not limitation, specific details are given, such as specific circuits, circuit elements, techniques, etc., in order to allow the reader to have a comprehensive understanding of the present invention. It will be apparent, however, to one skilled in the art that the invention may be practiced in other embodiments without limitation to the specific details given herein. In other instances, descriptions of well-known methods, devices, and circuits are omitted so as not to obscure the main topic.

[0017] The exemplary radio communication system discussed here uses a hybrid rDMA / CDMA approach in which communication between base stations and mobile terminals is accomplished using spreading codes, but where information is also transferred in discrete time slots. However, those skilled in the art will appreciate that the concepts disclosed herein can be used in other methods as well, including, but not limited to, F...

Abstract

A method and apparatus for synchronizing to a frame structure associated with base station transmissions in a radiocommunication system are described. A broadcast control channel can contain synchronization symbols within each of a plurality of timeslots. The symbols are organized in a sequence that is repeated each frame. Within each sequence are plurality of subsets of symbols which can be used to uniquely identify the phase of the frame.

Description

Background of the invention [0001] This invention relates to digital radio systems and, in particular, to achieving synchronization in spread spectrum communication systems as part of the processing of received signals. [0002] Radiocommunication systems need to send information over the air interface, eg to modulate a carrier wave with this information. When receiving a signal, the receiver attempts to extract accurate information from the received signal by using appropriate demodulation techniques. However, in order to demodulate the received signal, time synchronization between the transmitter and receiver is first required. Depending on the design of the radio communication system, different levels of synchronization are required. For example, in most systems, the clock difference between the transmitter and receiver produces a time difference on the order of bits. Furthermore, in some radio communication systems, information is transmitted in bursts, sometimes called...
