Embodiment Construction

[0021] Figure 1 shows a block diagram of a communication system 10 configured in accordance with the present invention. System 10 includes a hub site 12 and any number of customer premises equipment (CPE) sites 14 . The CPE site 14 is remote from the central site 12 . Each CPE site 14 communicates with the central site 12, but not necessarily between CPE sites 14.

[0022] The central site 12 includes a transmitter 16 and a receiver 18 and each CPE site includes a transmitter 20 and a receiver 22 . In the embodiment shown in FIG. 1 , central transmitter 16 and central receiver 18 share a common antenna 24 and CPE transmitter 20 and CPE receiver 22 share a common antenna 26 . Communication occurs via the RF transmission medium. However, neither a common site antenna nor an RF communication medium are essential requirements of the present invention.

[0023] As will be discussed in more detail below, system 10 implements an end-to-end feedback loop comprising CPE transmitter...

Abstract

A communication system (10) includes a transmitter (20) having a programmable signal (46, 58, 60, 80) operable to adjust for quadrature-phase signal imbalance induced by the transmitter. The receiver (18) of the system (10) is located remotely from the transmitter (20) and generates signal quality statistics (102, 112) that are monitored in a slow tracking feedback loop in order to formulate instructions indicating how to program the programmable signal ( 46, 58, 60, 80). The receiver (18) performs its signal quality statistics monitoring while the data stream (36) is being extracted from the received communication signal.

Description

Technical field: [0001] The present invention relates to digital communication systems. More particularly, the present invention relates to digital communication systems for adaptively balancing quadrature phase signals. Background technique: [0002] Digital communication systems conventionally use analog circuitry near the transmit and receive ports and digital circuitry elsewhere. In other words, before the communication signal is actually transmitted, the transmitter converts the digitally modulated signal to an analog signal, which is then processed through analog mixing, analog filtering, and amplification. Likewise, receivers perform certain analog amplification, analog filtering, and analog mixing before converting the received communication signal into a digital signal from which the transmitted data is extracted. [0003] Likewise, conventional digital communication systems transmit a data stream via quadrature phase modulation, wherein the data stream is modulat...
