The device itself has sufficient computing power and resources to perform various tasks related to data storage and retrieval. In particular, these resources are provided such that memory management of the storage device is performed at the device level, rather than requiring management, for example, by an external operating system, such as an operating system of the external computing device. Systems for providing removable, active, personal storage. The system (10) itself has sufficient computing power (18, 32, 38) and resources (24, 26, 32, 22) to perform various tasks related to data storage and retrieval. In particular, these resources are provided so that memory management of the storage device is performed at the device level, rather than requiring management by an external operating system, such as the operating system of an external computing device. At a minimum, the device includes: a data processor (32) of some type for executing instructions involving memory management; a flash memory device (20) for storing data and instructions; a flash controller (22), A USB controller (24) for controlling access to a flash memory device and a USB connector (26) for connecting the device to an external computing device via a USB bus (14) of the external computing device (12).
