Embodiment Construction

[0020] figure 1 A hierarchical structure of a particular embodiment of the invention is described, in which fixed wireless access (FWA) user traffic is divided into three classes, referred to as class 1, class 2 and class 3. Within each class, users can be placed in the active pool 2 , the inactive pool 4 or in another user category 6 depending on their current activity. As will be described below, when a user has no bandwidth requests or is connected to the system for more than a timeout it will be placed in the other user category.

[0021] In this embodiment, Class 1 users have guaranteed bandwidth allocations.

[0022] figure 2 is in figure 1 Block diagram of the system controller used to allocate bandwidth to users in the priority hierarchy structure of .

[0023] When a user of the system wishes to send data, it requests bandwidth allocation by sending a contention request to the contention processor 10 . Users can send different types of requests, for example, req...

Abstract

In a multi-user communications system in which users contend for limited total bandwidth, a bandwidth allocation method operates as follows. Each user is classified into one of a plurality of ranked classes. Each class contains an active pool (2), containing users which are queued to receive an allocated amount of bandwidth to transmit and / or receive a quantity of data, and an inactive pool, containing users which are not currently seeking to transmit and / or receive. In each class, the user at the head of the active pool queue uses its allocated bandwidth and then moves to the back of the queue if it has more data to transmit and / or receive; otherwise it moves to the inactive pool. In each class, if a user in the inactive pool contends for a bandwidth allocation, it is moved into the active pool queue. Preferably, different bandwidth access priorities are provided in different classes, so that users seeking bandwidth-critical communications, such as voice channels, may be placed in a high-priority class.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to methods and devices for communication bandwidth allocation, especially bandwidth allocation for applications in users of telecommunication systems such as Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) systems. Background technique [0002] In many telecommunication systems such as FWA, mobile telephony or cable systems, the available bandwidth is shared by several users. In such systems, users typically need to buy bandwidth and the system operator's goal is to sell as much bandwidth as possible. Typically, the total amount of bandwidth sold can exceed the total amount of bandwidth available because not all users require access at the same time. For example, an operator of a cable network providing Internet access will expect that at any given moment, on average, a certain percentage of users will not be requesting bandwidth access, even if the users are connected to the Internet, their demand for bandwidth Also intermittent. Therefor...
