[0024] figure 1 A heavy commercial vehicle 20 is shown comprising a tractor section 22 and a trailer section 24 articulated relative thereto. A plurality of wheels 26 are suspended from the chassis 25 of the trailer section such that the wheels are rotatable about axles 28 .

[0025] go to figure 2 , wherein a prior art suspension assembly 30 is shown, briefly, the suspension assembly 30 includes a spring steel suspension arm 32 , a chassis support bracket 34 and an air spring 36 . Chassis support brackets 34 and air springs 36 provide connection to and suspension relative to the trailer chassis 25 (shown in phantom for clarity) in a known manner. U-bolts 40 and top and bottom plates 41 a and 41 b provide a means of mounting axle 42 (shown in phantom for clarity) to trailing arm 32 . In particular, it should be noted that the bottom plate 41 b is directly welded to the axle 42 . Wheels (not shown) are fixed at each end of the axle 42 for rotation about the axis 28 . A sh...

Abstract

A suspension trailing arm is used for suspending a vehicle chassis from a beam type axle. The trailing arm comprises a chassis mounting feature, an axle mounting feature, and an arm portion intermediate the chassis mounting feature and an axle mounting feature, characterized in that the arm portion comprises a generally X-section profile having four limbs, two limbs in the four limbs are orientated to provide grooves upward during installation, wherein the shape limits an X-axis horizontally extending through the X-section profile center point, and the two limbs of the four limbs providing the grooves tilt up with respect to the X-axis, and each limb follows a substantial S-shaped path from a chassis lining to a shaft package part. The invention also provides a heavy vehicle suspension assembly including the suspension trailing.

Description

technical field [0001] The invention relates to a suspension trailing arm. More specifically, the present invention relates to suspension trailing arms having a substantially X-shaped cross-sectional portion, and to suspension assemblies including such trailing arms. Background technique [0002] Heavy commercial vehicles typically use a trailing arm suspension system, especially in relation to the trailer axle of an articulated vehicle, or possibly the rear axle of a rigid vehicle. [0003] Heavy commercial vehicles (including trucks, buses, and coaches) are distinguished from light commercial vehicles (such as vans) and light passenger vehicles by one or more of the following characteristics: [0004] 1. The load exceeds about 3.5 tons. [0005] 2. Use air brakes instead of hydraulic brakes (because air brakes are better able to withstand the higher heat generated by repeated braking of vehicles weighing more than about 3.5 tons). [0006] Such vehicles, including trail...
