Embodiment 1
[0017] Various blends of SAIB with glycerides and propylene glycol esters were prepared by first heating the SAIB to about 60°C to make it flowable, as described above. The SAIB and ester additive were weighed into a tank and mixed together. The mixture is then heated and mixed to ensure uniformity. The blends prepared are shown in Table I. For the blends indicated as cloudy or separated in Table I, the cloudy or separated occurred during or after the mixture was cooled to room temperature. Blends labeled as providing a smooth feel on the skin have a glossy appearance and provide a water-resistant coating on the skin that is difficult to wash off with soap and water. The water resistance of the coating on the skin is indicated by the beading of water as it is rinsed over the skin. These blends also found the same smooth, glide, shine and water-repelling effect when applied to the lips.

[0018] The contact angles of water on films of SAIB / ester additive blends were measured to demonstrate the water repellency properties of these blends. Contact angle is a measure of surface wettability and is described in ASTM D5725-99 test method. For each of the blends listed in Table II, weigh 0.2 g of the SAIB / Ester Additive Blend to a 50 lb sheet with an area of 28.3 cm 2 on kraft paper. Spread the mixture with your fingers to cover the surface of the kraft paper. Drip the water droplet onto the coated kraft paper. Based on the magnified video image of each water drop displayed on a monitor, the contact angle of each water drop resting on the surface of the coated kraft paper was measured. Water droplets that land on uncoated kraft paper are absorbed quickly into the paper. Therefore, the contact angle of water on uncoated paper is effectively 0°. The contact angles of the coated papers are given in Table 2. Larger contact angles indicate less wet and more water r...
Embodiment 3
[0019] Water vapor transmission rate (WVTR) was measured on the SAIB / ester additive blend film to determine if the blend improved skin moisture retention. The WVTR of Vaseline(R) Intensive Care(R) Water Resistant Skin Protectant Lotion (VIC Water Resistant Skin Protectant Lotion) was measured for comparison. For each blend and VIC wash evaluated, 0.5 g of the blend or VIC wash was weighed onto the center of a 9.5 cm diameter piece of kraft paper. Spread the mixture with your fingers to cover the surface of the kraft paper. WVTR is determined according to ASTM E96. The test conditions are 32°C and 50% room humidity. The results are given in Table III, where WVTR is reported as g / m 2 / 24 hours.
