The present invention can be applied to various communication systems. One example of such a communication system is the Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS) radio access network (UTRAN). It is a radio access network which includes wideband code division multiple access (WCDMA) technology and can also offer real-time circuit and packet switched services. The embodiments are not, however, restricted to the systems given as examples but a person skilled in the art may apply the solution to other communication systems provided with the necessary properties.

Abstract

A transmitter includes means for searching for and storing a maximum limit for a combined coding rate. The transmitter also includes means for selecting a first coding rate for a first transmission.
