Embodiment Construction

[0026] Figure 1 shows an injection molding machine 10 and robot assembly 12 embodying the present invention. Generally, the injection molding machine 10 includes an upper mold half 14 , a lower mold half 16 , movable platen 20 and support plate 22 . The lower mold half 16 is removably mounted on the movable platen 20 and the upper mold half 14 is removably mounted on a stationary support plate 22 . In use, the lower mold half 16 and the movable platen 20 move up and down to open and close the mold. The movable platen is preferably moved up and down under the action of hydraulic cylinders, hoists or other lifting devices. The two model halves are aligned along a stationary axis 24 by a movable platen 20 . Preferably, at each corner of the movable platen 20 there are three additional axes (not shown). The movable platen has corresponding holes (not shown) at its corners through which the shaft passes. The shaft is removably connected to the support plate 22 on which the uppe...

Abstract

A robot assembly and a method of installing a collar on a robot assembly. The robot assembly comprises a support shaft, an arm extending away from the shaft, a split connecting collar pivotally mounted on the support shaft and connected to the arm to connect the arm to the support shaft, and a tool connected to the arm for engaging the molded items and for removing the molded items from the molding machine. Two embodiments of the split collar are disclosed. The first is a multiple piece component, and the second is a single slotted body. The installation or removal of the collar is performed by moving the collar, or the collar components, away from the shaft, in a direction perpendicular to the shaft centerline instead of along and over the shaft diameter to the endpoint.

Description

[0001] Cross-references to related applications [0002] This application claims priority to the identically titled US Provisional Application Serial No. 60 / 360652 filed March 1,2002. This application is incorporated herein by reference in its entirety. technical field [0003] The present invention relates generally to a manipulator assembly for removing molded parts from molding machines; more specifically, to a manipulator assembly for removing parts known as lenses curres from high speed automatic molding machines . More specifically, the present invention relates to the design of a split collar for use on such manipulator assemblies. Background technique [0004] In recent years, various molding machines have been developed for automatically molding curved lenses at high speed. These curved lenses are then used to mold eyepieces. Such a system is described in US Patent 5,702,735, filed March 5, 1999, entitled "Model and Molding Machine for Making Ophthalmic Devices,...
