Embodiment Construction

[0041] Reference will now be made in detail to various aspects and embodiments of the invention.

[0042] Referring now to Figure 1, there is shown an apparatus for forming an optical storage device in accordance with the present invention. The arrangement comprises a web supply device or simply a web supply (not shown), a web path conveying the web material 12 and a web forming device arranged in the web path. The web forming apparatus 10 includes a die 14 . The die is loaded with a microstructure pattern for forming the web. The stamp is carried by a support 28 and may be heated by any suitable heating means 18 and / or by a drum or roller 22 in thermal contact with the stamp.

[0043] Pressure rolls 20 and backup rolls 22 may be arranged in the web path to press the die into the surface of the web material. The pressure roller and the back-up roller form the pressing zone 16 . As shown, the nip region 16 includes the narrowest region between the pressure roll 20 and the b...

Abstract

Methods and apparatus for forming microstructures (126) in the surface of polymeric web materials (12) for use as optical memory substrates, such as disks. The microstructures (126) may be formed by temporarily laminating a web material (12) to a hot stamper (16) into a nip zone (16) formed between the hot stamper (14), a pressure roller (20) and backing roller (22).The stamper (14) may be heated by any suitable heating device (18) to melt flow the surface of the web (12) and stabilize before separation. The stamper (14) may be carried through the nip zone (16) by a support (28) including a carriage (114), having hoops (118, 128) and a plurality of rollers (30, 32, 34), that is independent of the press formed by the pressure roller (20) and the backing roller (22). The pressure roller (20) and backing roller (22) are rotatively driven by drives (24, 26), respectively.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention generally relates to methods and apparatus for fabricating optical storage. More particularly, the present invention relates to forming substrates for optical storage and for the manufacture of optical discs using a continuous supply device or a roll-to-roll system. Background technique [0002] Optical storage such as CD (Compact Disc), CD-R, CD-RW; DVD (Digital Versatile Disc), DVD-R, DVD-ROM, DVD+RW, PD (Phase Change Disc), and MO (Magneto Optical Disk), etc. Disks are typically manufactured by initially shaping a substrate and depositing one or more thin film layers on the substrate. Substrates for optical storage are typically formed with a series of grooves and / or pits arranged in concentric tracks or continuous spirals. Grooves and pits can be used for laser beam tracking, address information, timing, error correction, data, etc. Substrates for optical discs are usually formed by injection molding, in which molten polyme...
