[0019] Turning now to the attached drawings, figure 1 is a block diagram of a system 10 for providing high speed data services, such as digitally modulated radio communication services known as Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA), over a radio communication connection. System 10 is comprised of one or more base station processors 12 and multiple user access units 14-1...14-n...14-m (collectively access units 14). figure 1 One base station 12 and three access units 14 are illustrated by way of example only and for ease of depicting the invention. The present invention is applicable to systems in which typically many more subscriber units communicate with one or more base stations.

[0020] Access unit 14 provides radio data services and is capable of connecting devices such as laptop computers, portable computers, personal digital assistants (PDAs) through base station 12 to what may be a public switched telephone network (PSTN), packet switched computer network or On the ne...

Abstract

A signal coding technique used in digital communication systems in which the data transmission rate of each communication channel can be adapted to specific channel conditions. Specifically, the coding rate of FEC is suitable for each channel, while maintaining a fixed block size independent of the FEC coding rate. This allows the data transmission rate of the system to be adapted to the channel conditions experienced by a particular user. Thus, users experiencing good communication conditions with low multipath distortion are likely to be assigned to higher capacity, whereas users with noticeable multipath distortion are likely to utilize lower rate (higher coding level) error codes to maintain high quality. Messages are passed from the transmitter to the receiver in order to inform the receiver of the encoding rate ultimately achieved at any given point. These parameters can be adjusted independently of the transmitted power level by expedients designed to keep the transmission frame size constant while possibly providing the ability to vary the FEC coding rate and FEC block size.

Description

technical field [0001] This invention relates generally to radiocommunication systems and more particularly to techniques for providing variable data rate connections over digitally encoded radiocommunication channels. Background technique [0002] The first generation of personal radio communication devices, such as cellular radiotelephones, operated by assigning distinct radio carrier frequencies to respective users. For example, in an Advanced Mobile Phone Service (AMPS) type cellular mobile telephone, two channels of 30 kilohertz (kHz) bandwidth are assigned to support full-duplex audio communications between individual subscriber units and the base station. The signal within each such channel is modulated using an analog technique such as frequency modulation (FM). [0003] The latest generation of systems use digital modulation techniques to allow multiple users to access the same spectrum simultaneously. These techniques appear to increase system capacity for a give...
