Embodiment Construction

[0027] FIG. 1 shows an exemplary oil well during a drilling operation. The drilling platform 2 is equipped with a derrick 4 supporting a hoist 6 . Drilling of oil and natural gas wells is typically performed using drill pipes connected together by "drill" joints 7 to form drill strings 8 . The hoist 6 hangs a kelly 10 for lowering the drill string 8 through a turntable. The drill bit 14 is connected to the lower end of the drill string 8 . The drill bit 14 is rotated by rotating the drill string 8 or by operating a downhole motor near the drill bit. Rotation of the drill bit 14 extends the wellbore.

[0028] The drilling fluid is pumped through the circulator 16 through the transfer pipe 18 , through the kelly 10 , and down through the high pressure and high volume drill string 8 to discharge from the nozzle or from the drill bit 14 . The drilling fluid is then transported back up the wellbore through a blowout preventer (not specifically shown) via an annular casing betwe...

Abstract

A communication system, as shown in Figure 6, employs discrete multi-tone ('DMT') modulated signals on a communication channel formed by inductively-coupled pipe (602). In one embodiment, the communication system includes a string of wired pipe joints that couple a transmitter to a receiver (608). Each pipe joint in the string possesses threaded ends configured for mechanically connecting with other pipe joints, a electrical or inductive coupler at each threaded end, and an insulated conductor that electrically connects the couplers. The transmitter and receiver communicate via DMT modulated signals transported by the wired pipe string. The system may further include multiple repeaters in the string. Each repeater may be configured to receive a DMT-modulated signal, to recover information from the DMT-modulated signal, and to re-transmit the information in the form of a DMT-modulated signal.

Description

Background technique [0001] Modern oil drilling and production operations require extensive information on downhole parameters and conditions. This information typically includes earth formation characteristics as well as information about the wellbore itself. Methods that can be used to acquire downhole information include wireline logging, logging while drilling ("LWD"), and seismic imaging. After drilling is completed, downhole data acquisition can be performed by permanently placing sensors, wireline logging, and seismic monitoring. [0002] In conventional wireline logging, after some or all of the mine has been drilled, a probe ("probe") that includes a formation sensor is lowered into the wellbore. The top end of the probe is connected to a cable that suspends the probe in the wellbore. The cable transmits power from the ground to the probe unit and information from the probe unit to the ground. Wireline logging often requires that the drill string or production tub...
