Embodiment Construction

[0014] Referring first to Figure 1 , the hub comprises a hollow cylindrical hub member 2 mounted for rotation on an axle 4 about the axis of the hub member 2 by means of bearings 6, which are only schematically indicated. Mounted at one end of the axle 4 for rotation about the axis of the axle 4 is a sprocket 8 around which, in use, the chain will be wound. Connected to the sprocket 8 is a tubular input shaft 10 which extends around the axle 4 and is mounted for rotation relative to the axle 4 by means of bearings 12 which are again only schematically indicated.

[0015] Housed inside the hub member 2 is a transmission system comprising a first planetary gear set 14 and a second planetary gear set 16 . The first planetary gear set 14 includes a first sun gear 18 mounted on a bearing 19 to rotate around the wheel shaft 4 and meshed with a plurality of planetary gears 20 . The planet gears 20 are mounted for rotation about respective planet shafts 22 connected to a first common...

Abstract

Hub comprising a cylindrical, hollow hub member (2), which is mounted to rotate about its axis and in whose interior is a transmission system having an input (10), which is mounted to rotate about the axis, and an output connected to rotate with the hub member. The transmission system comprises first and second epicyclic gearsets (14,16). The first gearset (14) comprises a first sun gear (18), which is mounted to rotate about the axis and is in mesh with a plurality of first planet gears (20) mounted to rotate about respective planet shafts (22) carried by a first common carrier (24), which is mounted to rotate about the first axis. The second gearset (16) comprises a second sun gear (28), which is mounted to rotate about the axis and is in mesh with a plurality of second planet gears (30) mounted to rotate about respective planet shafts (32) carried by a second common carrier (34). The first and second sun gears (18,28) are connected to the rotors (38,40) of first and second electric motor / generators, respectively. The power connections of the two stators (42,46) are connected via a controller (50) arranged to control the transmission of power from one motor / generator to the other.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to wheel hubs, in particular but not exclusively to hubs for or in combination with wheels, in particular bicycle wheels or motorcycle wheels, but also wheels of three or more wheeled vehicles, and in connection with variable ratio transmission systems Combined types of hubs. Background technique [0002] Bicycle wheels are known to have hubs in combination with variable ratio transmissions, but such transmissions can only provide a relatively small number of discrete gear ratios. It would be desirable to provide a bicycle wheel having a hub integrated with a continuously variable ratio transmission system. [0003] Motor vehicle manufacturers are under increasing social and legal pressure to provide engines with reduced fuel consumption and reduced pollutant emissions. One way of achieving these goals is to ensure that the vehicle's drivetrain always uses the optimum gear ratio, and this can only be achieved by providin...
