Embodiment 1

[0107] A pyrophosphate-bicarbonate dialysis concentrate containing sodium pyrophosphate (125 μM) and sodium bicarbonate (967 mM) was prepared. Dialysate is routinely prepared during hemodialysis by mixing two concentrates (an acidic concentrate and a basic concentrate) with the appropriate amount of water. Add pyrophosphate to the bicarbonate concentrate. In bicarbonate solution, pyrophosphate was found to be stably soluble at a concentration of 125 [mu]M. Pyrophosphate remains soluble after the bicarbonate concentrate is diluted and combined with the acidic dialysate to produce the final dialysate.

Embodiment 2

[0109] A pyrophosphate-bicarbonate dialysis concentrate containing sodium pyrophosphate (125 μM) and sodium bicarbonate (967 mM) was prepared. In bicarbonate solution, pyrophosphate was found to become stable and soluble at a concentration of 125 μM. Pyrophosphate remains soluble after the bicarbonate concentrate is diluted and combined with the acidic dialysate to produce the final dialysate solution.

[0110] The resulting final dialysate is used for hemodialysis in people with kidney disease. Current patients experience reduced calcium deposits relative to patients who have undergone treatment with conventional hemodialysis fluid lacking pyrophosphate.

Embodiment 3

[0112] A pyrophosphate-bicarbonate dialysis concentrate containing sodium pyrophosphate (100 μΜ) and sodium bicarbonate (967 mM) was prepared. The alkaline dialysate is diluted with water and then mixed with the acidic dialysate to obtain the final dialysate. The resulting final dialysate is used for hemodialysis in people with kidney disease.

Abstract

Compositions, systems, and methods of treating conditions such as vascular calcification conditions are disclosed. A representative method includes administering to an individual in need of treatment an effective amount of at least one effector agent. Another method includes prophylactically treating vascular calcification or vascular calcification-related conditions by administering to an individual in need of treatment an effective amount of at least one effector agent. Still another method includes treating vascular calcification by administering an effective amount of at least one effector agent to an individual in need of treatment via hemodialysis.

Description

[0001] Cross-references to related applications [0002] This application claims the benefit of co-pending U.S. Provisional Application Serial No. 60 / 515174, filed October 28, 2003, entitled "PyrophosphateDialysate Concentrate" priority, the entire contents of which are hereby incorporated by reference. field of invention [0003] The present disclosure relates generally to compositions, systems, agents and methods for administration to individuals, and more particularly, to compositions and agents specifically for the treatment of vascular calcification. Background technique [0004] Hemodialysis is a process that removes microscopic soluble toxins from blood through the use of a filter membrane such as a dialyzer. Dialysis treatment replaces the kidneys that normally serve as the body's natural filtration system. By using a blood filter and a known chemical solution as the dialysate, this therapy removes waste products and excess fluid from the bloodstream while maintain...
