Embodiment Construction

[0012] For simplicity and illustrative purposes, the principles of the embodiments are described primarily by reference to examples thereof. In the ensuing description, numerous specific details are set forth in order to provide a thorough understanding of the embodiments. It will be apparent, however, to one of ordinary skill in the art that the described embodiments may be practiced without limitation to these specific details. In other instances, well-known methods and structures have not been described in detail so as not to unnecessarily obscure the embodiments.

[0013] This article describes methods and systems for dynamically adjusting power consumption in an IT infrastructure, such as a data center, utilizing software usage agents and virtual machine (VM) hosts to achieve cost and energy savings. As referred to herein, a VM host is an abstracted or virtualized computing layer or platform created within a physical or hardware computing platform. A virtualized computi...

Abstract

The present invention relates to regulating power consumption. A system (100) for dynamically adjusting power consumption in an information technology (IT) infrastructure having a plurality of computing nodes interconnected by a network is provided. The system (100) includes at least one virtual machine (VM) host (120) for use at each of a plurality of computing nodes, the at least one VM host operable to host at least one VM guest (110a-n), and VM hosts on different ones of the plurality of computing nodes are version compatible to allow migration of VM guests between VM hosts. The system also includes a management module (190) connected to the plurality of computing nodes over a network to receive local measurements of computing resource performance specifications for each of the plurality of computing nodes, the management module operable to at least based on the received multiple computing nodes The performance specification of a computing node dynamically adjusts the power consumption of multiple computing nodes by migrating VM guests between VM hosts.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to regulating power consumption. Background technique [0002] The energy and cooling costs of large information technology (IT) infrastructures, such as data centers, can easily exceed millions of dollars per year. However, the usage of computing resources (such as central processing unit (CPU), memory, network switches, etc.) within each data center is much less than maximum performance. Consequently, most energy and cooling costs are consumed by "idle" computing resources, thus wasting energy and driving up the cost of IT infrastructure. As referred to herein, and as understood in the art, information technology or IT includes all forms of technology including, but not limited to, the design, development, installation and implementation of hardware and software information systems and software applications for Create, store, exchange and utilize information in various forms, including but not limited to business data,...
