Embodiment Construction

[0045] It can be obtained that, based on the technique disclosed by Beynon et al. in Journal of the SID, 1999, 7, 71, the LCD converts a first linear polarization such as visible light to an arbitrary different linear polarization. By setting the twist angle φ to + or -90° (+ or -π / 2), the angle γ of the linear polarization orientation rotation (relative to the incident polarization orientation) and the retardation of the nematic liquid crystal layer in the following cases Get in touch:

Abstract

A polarisation rotator is provided for rotating the polarisation direction of linearly polarised light by any arbitrary angle other than 90 DEG . The device comprises a layer of liquid crystal material disposed between alignment surfaces. In one mode, a 90 DEG twist is induced in the liquid crystal director. An expression is provided for relating the retardation of the layer to the amount of polarisation rotation and the angle between the polarisation direction of incident light and the alignment direction at the input side of the liquid crystal layer.

Description

[0001] This application is a divisional application with the filing date of "June 30, 2003", the application number of "03145722.3", and the title of "Polarization Rotator, Parallax Barrier, Display and Optical Modulator". technical field [0002] The present invention relates to a rotator for rotating the polarization plane of linearly polarized light to an arbitrary angle. For example, such a rotator could be used as part of a parallax barrier in a display, or as an optical modulator for long-distance communications. The invention also relates to parallax barriers, displays and optical modulators comprising such polarization rotators. Background technique [0003] One known type of liquid crystal device (LCD) is twisted nematic (TN). In such devices, a layer of nematic liquid crystal material is placed between opposing alignment surfaces such as polyimide, which allows the liquid crystal director to align from one alignment surface to the other without an applied field T...
