Problems solved by technology

[0022] Relying on the use of several membranes is inconvenient; it is therefore an object of the present invention to produce a membrane with selectivity and permeability capable of handling atmosphere compositions from about 21% oxygen to about 0% oxygen and from 0% to Change in % CO2 to 21% CO2

Embodiment Construction

[0086] Figure 1 shows a container 1 with the elements installed as a device constructed in accordance with a preferred embodiment of the present invention. The container 1 comprises a top 2 , a bottom panel 3 , two side walls (not shown), a rear wall 4 (formed as a door) and a front wall 5 .

[0087] Also shown is a membrane 6 which is formed as a gas-permeable plastic film. The membrane 6 is adapted to be attached to the side walls, top 2 and floor 3 of the container 1 to separate the container 1 into a storage area 7 and a gas buffer area 8 . The membrane 6 is configured to be more permeable for carbon dioxide than for other gases present in the container 1 (eg oxygen, nitrogen, ethylene).

[0088] Also shown is a bi-directional flow device 9 comprising a valve 10 and adapted to open to facilitate flow of gas into or out of the container and air into the cargo area 7 of the container. In addition, bi-directional flow means 11 are shown, acting as inlet and outlet and adapt...

Abstract

The invention relates to an apparatus for controlling the composition of gases within a cargo container. The apparatus includes at least one sensor, at least one controller and at least one gas permeable membrane being adapted to facilitate the passage there through of different parts of gasses at different rates. A first region and a second region, the first region being for holding cargo and the second region defining a gas buffer region, said at least one inlet and / or outlet being in communication with said buffer region, said membrane being adapted to allow oxygen and carbon dioxide to flow through it, provided that the direction of the flow of oxygen is opposite that of the carbon dioxide, wherein the membrane has a permeability for carbon dioxide, which is at least eight times higher than the permeability for oxygen. The invention further relates to a method.

Description

technical field [0001] The invention relates to a device for controlling the composition of a gas. Preferably, the invention may be adapted to provide means for a container, wherein such means is preferably adapted to control the gas composition within the container. In this specification, the invention will be referred to for controlling the composition of a gas within a vessel, but those skilled in the art will appreciate that other applications are also conceivable for the invention. [0002] The invention also relates to a method for controlling the composition of a gas. Background technique [0003] The use of shipping or shipping containers is known to transport products and merchandise over long distances. In order to extend or otherwise preserve the shelf life of such transportable products, shipping containers are usually equipped with some form of temperature regulation system, such as a refrigeration system. [0004] Where the product to be transported is a per...
