[0015] Figure 1 shows one embodiment of a coal fired power plant 10 implementing one embodiment of the invention. Power plant 10 includes a combustor 12 . The combustion chamber 12 is connected to a chimney 14 by ductwork 16 . The flue gases from the coal combustion travel along the ductwork 16 and exit through the chimney 14 .

[0016] Using an embodiment of the present invention, lignite or sub-bituminous coal 20 is injected into the combustion chamber 12 . The high temperature in the chamber 12 activates the coal and causes changes in the coal, however at this stage the activated coal has a lower affin...

Abstract

A method and apparatus for treating a coal combustion flue gas. In one embodiment, the method includes injecting a halogen into a flue gas, and injecting partially combusted, carbon enriched alkaline coal ash solid particles into the flue gas ahead of a particulate collection device. In another embodiment, the method includes exposing partially combusted, carbon enriched alkaline coal ash solid particles to a halogen containing atmosphere, and injecting the halogen atmosphere treated alkaline carbon containing solid particles into the flue gas ahead of a particulate collection device.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates generally to methods and apparatus for reducing mercury emissions from flue gases, and more particularly to methods and apparatus for reducing mercury emissions resulting from the combustion of certain types of coal in coal fired power plants. Background technique [0002] Because of the hazards mercury poses and because of government regulations, many efforts have been made to capture mercury before it is released from coal-fired power plants. [0003] For example, Oehr in U.S. Patent No. 6,808,692 (the entire contents of which are incorporated herein by reference) describes the use of molecular halogens such as chlorine (Cl 2 )) to replace elemental mercury (Hg 0 ) into mercury chloride (HgCl 2 ). Since mercuric chloride can be dissolved by alkaline solids, especially calcium oxide (CaO) or calcium hydroxide (Ca(OH) 2 ) of solid adsorption, so this conversion is more desirable. Typically, collection is accomplished ...
