Embodiment Construction

[0035] figure 1 Internal combustion engine 100 is illustrated including cylinder 102 within which piston 104 reciprocates, wherein piston 104 and cylinder 102 define a combustion chamber 106 therebetween. Piston 104 is connected to crankshaft 110 by connecting rod 108 . Crankshaft 110 drives a camshaft (not shown), which in turn drives intake valves 112 and exhaust valves 114 . Intake valve 112 and exhaust valve 114 are actuated in synchronous relationship with movement of piston 104 within cylinder 102 , with return springs (not shown) biasing valves 112 , 114 back into their seats.

[0036] The fuel injection system of engine 100 includes fuel injector 116 configured to deliver fuel 118 into intake passage 120 upstream of intake valve 112 . A throttle valve 122 is disposed in the intake passage 120 to control the flow of charge air into the intake passage 120 and the combustion chamber 106 .

Abstract

The present invention relates to a method of operating an internal combustion engine. With reference to Figure 1, fuel is supplied to charge air using an injector (116) which in each operation delivers a set amount of fuel. The amount of fuel supplied to the charge air in each engine cycle is controlled by how many times the injector (116) operates in each cycle. A desired fuel demand is calculated as a number of operations of the injector per cycle, calculated to at least one decimal place. In varying operating conditions of the engine the desired fuel demand is rounded to a near integer to provide an output fuel demand for the injector as a number of operations of the injector for the next operating cycle In steady state operating conditions of the engine an aggregate number of operations for a plurality of engine cycles is calculated which is closer to an aggregated desired fuel demand for the plurality of cycles than if for each cycle of the plurality of output cycles the output fuel demand is calculated independently.

Description

technical field [0001] The invention relates to a fuel injection method for an internal combustion engine and to a fuel injection system or a fuel injection unit for carrying out the method. Background technique [0002] Currently, most internal combustion engines in automobiles use a fuel injection system to supply fuel to the engine's combustion chambers. Fuel injection systems have replaced older carburetor technologies because they allow better control of fuel delivery and allow the engine to meet emissions regulatory targets while improving overall efficiency. [0003] It is important that the fuel injection system delivers the proper amount of fuel at the proper time. Improper delivery of fuel can result in reduced engine output and wasted fuel. [0004] While the currently available (as described above) complex and highly developed fuel injection systems are ideal for use in automotive internal combustion engines, there are many other applications for internal combu...
