Embodiment Construction

[0020] see figure 1 , showing a device for hyperpolarizing materials used in nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Polarizer system 10 is a closed cycle thermal system configured to hyperpolarize a sample of imaging agents for use in MRI. For example, samples can be obtained by 13 C 1 - pyruvate or another reagent that can be polarized. The polarizer system 10 is formed in part by a vacuum chamber 12 that encloses the internal components of the system. The polarizer system 10 also includes an insulating housing 16 located within the vacuum chamber 12 . The thermal shield 16 surrounds the major components of the polarizer system 10 and functions to reduce the radiative heat load on those components. In one embodiment, the insulating shell 16 is constructed of aluminum and is insulated with twenty or more layers of a highly insulating material such as multi-layer insulation (MLI).

Abstract

A system for polarizing a material to be used in techniques employing magnetic resonance (MR) is provided. The polarizer system includes a cooling chamber having a cryogenic refrigerant (26) therein for use in polarizing a substance (22). A sorption pump (46) is connected to the cooling chamber to reduce a pressure therein to allow for hyperpolarizing of the sample. The sorption pump is cooled bya refrigeration system (14, 72, 90) to promote molecular adsorption in the sorption pump. The cooling chamber, sorption pump, and refrigeration system are arranged in a closed system.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention generally relates to a method and apparatus for polarizing a sample for magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Background of the invention [0002] The present invention relates to nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) analysis, in particular NMR spectroscopy for nuclear magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and high resolution analysis. MRI is a diagnostic technique that has become particularly attractive to physicians because it is non-invasive and does not involve exposing the patient under study to any potential harm, such as from X-rays. High-resolution analytical NMR spectroscopy is often used to determine molecular structures. [0003] MRI and NMR spectroscopy lack some degree of sensitivity due to the often very low polarization of the nuclear spins of typically used contrast agents. There are many techniques for improving the polarization of nuclear spins. These techniques are called hyperpolarization techniques and lead to increased...
