Embodiment Construction

[0022] figure 1 A prior art refrigeration system 20 is shown incorporating two cascade circuits 21 and 23 . The lower circuit 23 includes a compressor which delivers compressed refrigerant into the refrigerant to a refrigerant heat exchanger 24 . Heat exchanger 24 is preferably located outside the air-conditioned environment. From heat exchanger 24 , the refrigerant passes through expansion device 26 and into indoor heat exchanger 28 . Fan 30 blows air over the exterior surface of indoor heat exchanger 28 and delivers this conditioned air into environment 32 as is known. The lower circuit 23 will normally be charged with a refrigerant which will operate in the subcritical region. The refrigerant that can be used in this circuit will be carbon dioxide refrigerant, while in the lower cascade circuit it will also be in the subcritical region. If this same CO2 refrigerant is used in an upstream cascade circuit, it is likely to operate in transcritical mode

Abstract

An improved refrigerant system incorporates at least two circuits arranged in a cascaded relationship. Preferably, the upper circuit utilizes a hydrocarbon refrigerant and preferably the lower circuit utilizes CO2 refrigerant. Preferably, the CO2 cascaded circuit mainly operates in a subcritical region. To improve the efficiency and capacity control of the cascaded refrigerant system, at least one of the circuits is equipped with performance enhancement features such as, for example, an economized function provided by a flash tank or economizer heat exchanger. Additional enhancement features can also include a liquid-suction heat exchanger and bypass function.

Description

Background technique [0001] The present application relates to refrigeration systems having at least two cascaded circuits, in particular cascaded refrigeration systems having performance enhancing components. [0002] For example, two different refrigerants can be used in each of the two circuits, where the hydrocarbon refrigerant can only be used in the upper circuit and the other refrigerant in the lower circuit. The type of hydrocarbon refrigerant may be, for example, propane or isobutylene refrigerant. Since the upstream circuit can be located outside the enclosed conditioned room, it will provide the advantage that flammable refrigerants are also located outside the enclosed space, which will alleviate flammability concerns for these refrigerants. By utilizing two cascaded circuits, the charging capacity of the upper circuit will be substantially reduced compared to a single circuit refrigeration system. Due to the reduced charge in the upstream circuit, the flammabili...
