Problems solved by technology

[0008] A disadvantage of this approach is that additional equipment is required (i.e., additional lasers, couplers, linear filters, and variable optical amplifiers)
Such additional series components degrade noise performance resulting in an increase in optical power required for a given span budget

Embodiment Construction

[0044] The present inventors have realized that the spectral tilt of an optical signal in an optical transmission system can be effectively minimized by separately compensating for the spectral tilt effect arising from two different physical mechanisms. This approach is particularly advantageous under varying channel conditions, since the error per channel power is then reduced compared to prior art solutions. The number of channels in an optical signal may change due to changes in traffic load and / or due to channel failures.

[0045] Figure 1A is a graph indicating typical wavelength-dependent attenuation for the span of an optical waveguide that a predetermined optical signal would encounter. The optical signal includes multiple channels, where each channel is at a different optical wavelength. In the example shown, the optical signal includes 14 channels. exist Figure 1A And generally in the drawings, the center wavelength of each of the channels forming the optical sig...

Abstract

A method of compensating for spectral tilt in an optical transmission system. The system comprises at least one span of optical waveguide for transmission of an optical signal and at least one optical amplifier for amplifying a power of the optical signal. The method comprises applying a predetermined spectral tilt to the optical signal to offset a spectral tilt effect dependent upon a property of the span(s) and independent of the optical signal power, and controlling the optical amplifier(s) to provide a gain tilt to offset a spectral tilt effect dependent upon a property of the optical signal.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to methods and associated devices for compensating for spectral tilt in optical transmission systems. Embodiments of the present invention are particularly suitable, but not limited to, for use in WDM (Wavelength Division Multiplexing) optical communication networks. Background technique [0002] Wavelength division multiplexing is the transmission of several different signals over a single optical fiber by sending each signal ("channel") at a slightly different optical frequency or wavelength. A multiplexer is used to combine different channels together into an optical signal for transmission, and a demultiplexer is used to separate the channels. [0003] A WDM optical transmission system or network usually consists of multiple spans and includes various network elements such as terminations, line amplifiers and add / drop nodes. It is known that it is desirable to control the power level on all channels in a WDM system. ...
