Embodiment Construction

[0021] Exemplary embodiments of the present invention provide a system that determines whether a vehicle should be driven in a purely electric drive mode or in a hybrid mode in which an IC engine is also operated. According to the invention a simple and fast algorithm is provided to evaluate the energy-related advantages of electric drive of a vehicle under given conditions.

[0022] According to the present invention, the exemplary system analyzes system losses for pure electric drive and system losses for hybrid drive at a given speed for a given drive torque requirement in order to derive the energy-related advantages of pure electric drive . For example, the required minimum energy-related advantage is determined from several variables that may depend on the conditions of the vehicle and on external conditions. These variables may be related to the state of charge of the battery, hysteresis conditions of the IC engine, and the like. This energy-related advantage is then ...

Abstract

A method of selecting drive modes of a hybrid vehicle is described. The method includes determining an energy efficiency of purely electric drive mode, determining an energy efficiency of non-electric or hybrid drive mode, computing an energy related advantage of the purely electric drive from the determined energy efficiencies, and computing a required minimum energy related advantage based on operational parameters of the hybrid vehicle. A comparison is then made between the energy related advantage and the required minimum energy related advantage, and when results of the comparison are within selected limits, purely electric drive of the hybrid vehicle is commanded.

Description

technical field [0001] The invention relates to a hybrid vehicle. In particular, the invention relates to a method for selecting whether to drive a vehicle in purely electric mode or in hybrid mode. Background technique [0002] Hybrid vehicles use electric motors powered by one or more batteries to supplement or replace the propulsion provided by a primary motor, such as an internal combustion engine. In purely electric drive mode (“e-drive”), the propulsion of the vehicle is ensured by an electric motor which consumes the electric power stored in the battery. Advantages of pure electric drive mode include reduced vehicle emissions and more energy-efficient operation of the vehicle depending on the operating environment. [0003] In hybrid drive mode, the vehicle's propulsion is ensured by both the electric motor and the main motor, which is typically (but not exclusively) an internal combustion (IC) engine. Using a specially designed transmission, the internal combustio...
