Problems solved by technology

Because this quiescent level is continuous, it consumes a lot of power
While the use of this large amount of power is not a problem for large signal conversion systems, for hearing devices which are preferably small and use small batteries that are infrequently replaced, at least in some cases this use of power may cause question

Embodiment Construction

[0082] Embodiments of the present invention may be used in a variety of applications in which tissue is stimulated by at least one of vibration or electrical current, such as the use of wireless communication to treat neurological disorders (eg, patients with Parkinson's disease), and cochlear implants. A light signal is sent to a photodetector attached to the tissue to stimulate the tissue. Tissue may be stimulated by at least one of vibration or electrical current. For example, the tissue may be vibrated so that the user perceives sound. Alternatively or in combination, tissue such as nerve tissue may be stimulated with electrical current, thereby causing the user to perceive sound. The optical signaling structures described herein may have a variety of uses outside of the field of hearing and hearing loss, and may be used to treat neurological disorders such as Parkinson's disease.

Abstract

An audio signal transmission device includes a first light source and a second light source configured to emit a first wavelength of light and a second wavelength of light, respectively. The first detector and the second detector are configured to receive the first wavelength of light and the second wavelength of light, respectively. A transducer electrically coupled to the detectors is configured to vibrate at least one of an eardrum or ossicle in response to the first wavelength of light and the second wavelength of light. The first detector and second detector can be coupled to the transducer with opposite polarity, such that the transducer is configured to move with a first movement in response to the first wavelength and move with a second movement in response to the second wavelength, in which the second movement opposes the first movement.
