[0175] Examples 1-4: Cured Adhesive Compositions

[0176] Examples 1-4 are cured adhesive compositions prepared as indicated in Table 6 by mixing the indicated epoxy side (selected from Preliminary Examples 6-9) with the curing agent side (selected from Preparatory Example 5) . In a small tin cup, 43.8 grams of epoxy resin and reactive liquid modifier side and 10.0 grams of hardener side were thoroughly mixed together with 1 wt % glass beads (250 microns in diameter). Bonds were prepared as described above on steel as received (unoiled) and cured at room temperature for 24 hours and then at 180°C for 30 minutes.

[0177] The adhesive bonds were tested at room temperature as described above. The term "TCF" means thin profile cohesive failure, and the term "Coh" means cohesive failure.

[0185] Examples 5-6 are cured adhesive compositions prepared as indicated in Table 8 by mixing the indicated first part (selected from Preliminary Examples 10-11) with the second part (selected from Preparatory Example 5). In a small tin cup, 43.8 grams of the first part and 10.0 grams of the second part were thoroughly mixed together with 1% by weight glass beads (250 microns in diameter). Coated with 3g / m2 as above 2 Adhesions were prepared on steel in Oest B804 / 3COW-1 oil and cured at room temperature for 24 hours and then at 180°C for 30 minutes.

[0186] The adhesive bonds were tested at room temperature as described above. The term "TCF" means thin profile cohesive failure, and the term "Coh" means cohesive failure.

Abstract

Curable adhesive compositions, cured adhesive compositions, and articles that include the cured adhesive compositions are described. The curable adhesive composition contains a) an epoxy resin, b) a curing agent, c) a reactive liquid modifier, and d) a toughening agent. The cured adhesive compositions can be used as structural adhesives.

Description

technical field [0001] Curable adhesive compositions, cured adhesive compositions, and articles comprising cured adhesive compositions are described. Background technique [0002] Structural adhesives are generally thermosetting compositions that can be used to replace or augment conventional joining techniques such as screws, bolts, nails, staples, rivets and metal fusion processes such as welding, brazing and soldering. Structural adhesives are used in a variety of applications such as within the automotive and aerospace industries. To be useful as a structural adhesive, good mechanical strength and impact resistance are required. [0003] The physical properties of a structural adhesive bond depend on the interaction between the structural adhesive and the surface of the substrate to which it is applied. Under ideal conditions, structural adhesives are applied to clean surfaces; however, the surfaces of some substrates are contaminated with hydrocarbon-containing substa...
