Abstract

The method involves recirculating two different amounts of exhaust gases at two different pressures from two exhaust passages (46, 48) of a cylinder (14) to two intake passages (42, 44), respectively. The fuel is directly injected into the cylinder, and the injected fuel is mixed with the exhaust gases in the cylinder. The mixture in the cylinder is combusted. An exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) cooler (82) is operated to heat and cool aircharge delivered to the cylinder through the intake passages during two conditions, respectively.
