Problems solved by technology

[0009] One problem encountered is that offset printing inks have too high a viscosity (typically much higher than 50,000 cps) to be useful in nozzle-based inkjet systems
Multi-color printing is highly desirable and for many reasons including cost, complexity, maintenance, size, energy consumption, a multi-print engine system is less than optimal

Embodiment Construction

[0084] We stated at the outset that descriptions of well-known materials, processing techniques, components, devices, and other well-known details are only outlined or are omitted so as not to unnecessarily obscure the details of the invention. Thus, where details are known in another form, we leave it to the application of the invention to suggest or dictate choices relating to those details.

[0085] refer to figure 1 , in which is shown a system 10 for multicolor variable lithography according to one embodiment of the present disclosure. System 10 includes an imaging member 12 (in this embodiment a drum, but could equally be a plate, belt, mesh, etc.) surrounded by a number of subsystems described in detail below. Imaging member 12 applies an ink image to substrate 14 at nip 16 between imaging member 12 and impression roller 18 where substrate 14 is pressed. Various types of substrates can be used, such as paper, plastic or synthetic sheet films, ceramics, glass, and the ...

Abstract

The present invention relates to a variable data lithography system for applying multi-component images and the system thereof. The reimageable layer of the imaging member is provided with a layer of wetting fluid. The reimageable layer has specific properties such as composition, surface profile, etc. to be well suited to receive and carry the wetting fluid layer. An optical patterning subsystem, such as a scanning modulated laser, patterns the wetting fluid layer. Ink having a first set of properties such as color, composition, etc. is applied at the inking subsystem such that it selectively resides in voids formed in the wetting fluid layer by the patterning subsystem to thereby form an inked latent image. The inked latent image is then transferred to a substrate, and the reimageable surface is cleaned. This process is repeated for a second ink having different properties than the first ink. Each ink image can be applied sequentially to the substrate, or a composite image can be formed and then applied to the substrate.

Description

[0001] Cross References to Related Applications [0002] This disclosure is a continuation-in-part of U.S. Patent Application Serial No. 13 / 095,714, filed April 27, 2011, entitled "VariableDataLithography System," which is hereby incorporated by reference and requires its priority. Background technique [0003] The present disclosure relates to marking and printing methods and systems, and more particularly to methods and systems for variably marking or printing multi-component (eg, multi-color) data using marking or printing materials such as UV lithographic and offset inks. [0004] Offset lithography is currently a common printing method. (For this purpose the terms "printing" and "marking" are interchangeable). In a typical lithographic process, a printing plate (which may be a flat plate, the surface of a cylinder, or a belt, etc.) is formed with "image areas" of hydrophobic and oleophilic material and "non-image areas" of hydrophilic material. image area". Image area...
