Embodiment Construction

[0017] In general, and see figure 1 The illustrated engine exhaust system 10 shows a turbocharged internal combustion engine 12 with a fresh air intake 12 a and an exhaust gas outlet 12 b. The engine exhaust system 10 includes an exhaust gas treatment system including an EGR cooler 14 , a turbocharger 16 with a turbocharger compressor 18 , and a charge air cooler 20 . These structures will be generally referenced herein and identified in the drawings, but since each of these exhaust treatment structures is well known to those skilled in the art, a detailed description of the operation of each structure is not provided.

[0018] The proposed exhaust gas treatment system also includes a Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) 22 for collecting particulate matter from the exhaust gas output channel 12b. Ultimately, the DPF needs to be cleaned or regenerated for efficient and continuous operation. One method of filter regeneration is to use high temperature exhaust gas. Raising the exh...

Abstract

A system and a method for efficient regeneration of a diesel particulate filter used in the exhaust system of a diesel engine, are disclosed. In various systems, a burner is incorporated into the exhaust stream, and prior to the diesel particulate filter. Because the burner requires precise amounts of fuel and air to operate properly, an air flow delivery device, such as a positive displacement pump or blower is incorporated into the system to channel boost air to the burner. Alternatively, a bypass line may be used in conjunction with a pressure regulator, wherein the bypass line diverts the boost air from the pump or blower, while the pressure regulator controls the final pressure to the burner.

Description

technical field [0001] The systems and methods of the present invention relate to efficient regeneration of diesel particulate filters used in exhaust systems of diesel engines. Specifically, the system and method involve supplying the combustor with precise amounts of fuel and air to properly raise and maintain exhaust gas temperatures for efficient filter regeneration. Background technique [0002] Diesel engines are efficient, durable and economical. However, diesel exhaust can be harmful to the environment and humans. To reduce this hazard, governments such as the United States and the European Union have proposed stricter regulations on diesel engine exhaust emissions. These environmental regulations require diesel engines to meet the same pollution emission standards as gasoline engines. Typically, diesel engine systems require additional equipment and modifications in order to meet these regulations and standards. [0003] For example, lean-burn engines provide im...
