Problems solved by technology

[0009] The problem encountered when using accelerometers to derive walking or running speed from a person's foot motion is that if the accelerometer is installed incorrectly or if the accelerometer becomes disoriented during use, the method becomes Not quite accurate
Another problem with the approach using accelerometers is that additional sensors of another type must be used in order to derive parameters that require information about the line of footsteps

Embodiment Construction

[0037] Figure 1a A flowchart showing a method of deriving the speed of a walking or running person. The method comprises a first step 1 of arranging a pressure sensor between a foot and a support surface, such as a floor or a path on which a person walks or runs. In a second step 6, a correlation between the velocity of the person and the velocity of the center of pressure is obtained. This step can be performed at a later stage. In a third step 13 the pressure sensor measures data and makes this data available for processing. In the fourth step 4, the pressure center step line is determined, and the pressure center velocity V is calculated according to the pressure center step line COP . In a fifth step 5, it is detected whether the person is walking or running. This step can be performed when determining the center of pressure gait line. In a sixth step 7, the velocity of the person is deduced from the correlation and the velocity of the center of pressure. As will be...

Abstract

A method and system for determining the speed of a walking or running person based on foot motion. The method includes placing (1) a pressure sensor between the foot and the ground, which sensor may be placed on or in the insole of the shoe. The pressure sensor is configured to send pressure data to a communication unit (9). The method also includes the steps of determining a center of pressure gait line (3) and calculating a center of pressure velocity (4) from the gait line. Furthermore, the method includes the step (5) of detecting whether the person is walking or running. Another step (6) is to obtain the correlation between the velocity of the person and the velocity of the center of pressure. As a final step (7) of the method, the speed of the person is deduced from this correlation. The system includes a human-machine interface for control and notification to the user.

Description

technical field [0001] The invention relates to a method for determining the speed of a walking or running person from foot movements. The invention also relates to a system for providing the speed of a walking or running person. Background technique [0002] Measuring a person's walking or running speed is important for science, therapy, and training. Information obtained by such measurements can be used, for example, to improve human performance in sports and rehabilitation. [0003] There are many technologies that can measure running speed including the use of Global Positioning System (GPS), accelerometer-inertial devices, accelerometer-based pedometers, timing / counting sensors. Each of these methods has varying degrees of accuracy and each method has its limitations. Common timing and counting devices do not provide very reliable measurements of speed or distance because they rely on the assumption that a person's step length remains constant regardless of his speed...
