Embodiment Construction

[0047] The present invention, which relates to a method of measuring brain shift, will now be described in the context of a surgical procedure capable of introducing such brain shift. It should be noted that the computer-implemented methods for analyzing images described herein relate to the analysis of medical images taken during such surgical procedures and are not intended to include any of the surgical steps outlined below. These surgical steps are described below purely as an aid in understanding how to use the computer-implemented analysis method of the present invention.

[0048] refer to figure 1 , illustrates in a very general sense the preoperatively acquired (T2) MRI image. The image shows the patient's skull 2 and brain 4 . Such a T2MRI image will also detail different structures in the brain, but for ease of understanding these structures will be figure 1 omitted.

[0049] As is conventional in neurosurgical techniques, such MRI images are used by surgeons t...

Abstract

A method for determining brain displacement, such as that occurring after neurosurgical intervention, is described. The method includes taking a first image of the subject's brain (4), the first image showing the position of blood vessels (20) within the brain relative to a reference position (30). A second image of the brain (4) is also obtained, the second image being acquired after the intervention on the subject, the second image being acquired using a computed tomography (CT) imaging instrument. This second image shows the position of blood vessels (20') within the brain relative to the reference position (30). Brain displacement is then determined from a shift in the position of blood vessels in at least one region of interest (32) of the brain relative to the reference position (30) between the first image and the second image. Bit. Corresponding instrumentation is also described.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to an apparatus and method for analyzing brain images, and more particularly, the present invention relates to a computer-implemented technique for determining brain displacement from brain images where blood vessels are visible. Background technique [0002] Over the years, various neurosurgical techniques have been developed. These techniques involve the insertion of neurosurgical instruments, such as catheters or electrodes, into targets within the brain parenchyma. These neurosurgical instruments can be guided to a position with sub-millimeter precision using stereotaxic techniques of the type described, for example, in EP1509153. [0003] While stereotaxic instruments are available that are capable of precisely guiding neurosurgical instruments to predetermined sites, there is no guarantee that such instruments will actually reach target structures within the brain identified by the surgeon through preoperative MRI s...
