The method includes the steps of firstly, acquiring related data of each generator set of a power system containing N generator sets; secondly, building a mathematic optimizing model of the power economic dispatching problem; thirdly, obtaining a singular point, formed by a valve point and the output upper limit, of each generator set; fourthly, allowing the output, in the feasible solutions, of at most one generator set is not at the singular point; fifthly, allowing the outputs, in the feasible solutions, of at least two generator sets are not at the singular point, allowing the fuel cost function to the output first derivative of the generator sets to be equal, and traversing and searching the feasible solutions satisfying the fourth step and the fifth step; sixthly, taking feasible solution, obtained in the fourth and fifth steps, with the minimal fuel cost as the global minimal solution to the problem. The method has the advantages that the necessary condition of the spatial local minimal solution to the problem is provided, and the solutions satisfying the condition are traversed and searched to obtain the global minimal solution to the problem.
