Aerodynamic seal for reduction of noise generated on aircraft control surfaces

Flap side edge noise mechanisms have been addressed in a large number of studies during the last decades. A specific vortex system emanates from the flap side edge due to the static pressure difference between the upper and lower flap surfaces. Such pressure difference leads to a merging between the two vortex systems that are generated on the upper and lower edges of the flap side contour. The present invention intends to show the application of a perforated blade seal (21) at the lower (11) and / or upper (8) side edges of the control surface contour, such as a flap (3), with the purpose of acting as a vortex generator, making difficult for the lower vortex system to move upwards and merge with the upper vortex system. The perforated blade seals (21) are preferably arranged on the inboard and outboard edges of high lift flaps (3).

Fast transition running shoe

A running shoe design focused on the heel section of running shoes used in, for example, T2 transition phase of the sport of triathlon. A heel counter portion of the shoe is a retractable flap. The flap retracts to an open position at a 45 to 90 degree angle awaiting the unhindered insertion of the runner's foot without any need for the runner to bend or sit. Immediately after the foot is inserted, the flap is closed with a pressing forward action by the athlete's other foot. The flap and the sides of the shoe are coated with adhesive, velcro-like materials. A variation of the foregoing uses a heel counter cut from the center top to the midsole area at the bottom, resulting in an acceptable size opening for uninhibited foot insertion when the flap (or strap) portion of the heel counter is set in the open position.

Method of assessing tissue viability using near-infrared spectroscopy

InactiveUS7729747B2Raise the possibilityDetermination of the viability of the tissueSensorsBlood flow measurementTissue viabilityTissue oxygenation
Prolonged and severe tissue hypoxia results in tissue necrosis in pedicled flaps. We demonstrate the potential of near-infrared spectroscopy for predicting viability of compromised tissue portions. This approach clearly identifies tissue regions with low oxygen supply, and also the severity of this challenge, in a rapid and non-invasive manner, with a high degree of reproducibility. Early, nonsubjective detection of poor tissue oxygenation following surgery increases the likelihood that intervention aimed at saving the tissue will be successful.
