Embodiment Construction

[0032] figure 2 A phased array system 200 is shown according to an exemplary embodiment. Phased array system 200 generally includes local oscillator (LO) 202 , phased array 204 , distribution network 208 , delay locked loop (DLL) pulse generator 214 , receiver circuitry 216 , and controller 218 . Phased array 204 typically includes a number of transceivers 206-1 through 206-N arranged in an array, each transceiver including a radiator (eg, a patch antenna, bonded wire Yagi antenna, packaged dipole, or loop antenna). Distribution network 208 typically includes buffers or amplifiers. Additionally, receiver circuitry 216 typically includes summing circuitry 210 and analog baseband circuitry 216 . Each of transceivers 206-1 through 206-N, local oscillator 202, distribution network 208, and summing circuit 210 are described in patent application publication US 2012 / 0062286A1 entitled "Terahertz Phase Array System". A detailed description.

Abstract

The present invention provides a method for determining the position of an object. In a phased array system (200), several transmit pulses of terahertz radiation are transmitted (typically) in successive cycles from a phased array (204) having several transceivers (206‑1 to 206‑N). These transmit pulses are generally configured to be reflected by the target for reception by the phased array within a scan range (which includes a digitization window of several sampling periods). The output signals of each transceiver (206-1 to 206-N) are then combined to produce a combined signal for each cycle. The combined signal is averaged for each sampling period within the digitization window of the transmitted pulse to produce an average signal for each sampling period within the digitization window. These averaged signals are then digitized.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates generally to phased arrays, and in particular to "on-chip" terahertz phased array systems. Background technique [0002] Phased array systems have become common and have several uses. The most common use for phased array systems is in radar systems (such as pulse radar and Doppler shift radar). In fact, phased array radars have replaced most of the previous generations of mechanically scanned radar systems because mechanical components are replaced by electronics making failure due to wear less likely and because the scan rate is much higher. [0003] FIG. 1 is a block diagram illustrating the basic functionality of a conventional phased array system 100 . System 100 generally includes signal generator 102 , phase shifters 104 - 1 through 104 -K, phased array 106 including radiators 106 - 1 through 106 -K , and direction controller 108 . In operation, the signal generator 102 provides a signal to be transmitted (eg puls...
