Embodiment Construction

[0093] like figure 1 As shown, an exhaust component such as an exhaust pipe or duct 10 includes an exhaust throttle valve, referred to as a passive valve assembly 12 . The passive valve assembly 12 is movable between an open position with minimal obstruction to the exhaust gas flow path 16 and a closed position with a majority of the exhaust gas flow path 16 blocked. The passive valve assembly 12 is resiliently biased toward the closed position and moves toward the open position when the exhaust gas flow develops pressure sufficient to overcome the biasing force.

[0094] In the example shown, the exhaust duct 10 includes a single tubular body 14 defining an exhaust gas flow path 16 . The passive valve assembly 12 includes a valve body or vane 18 that blocks a portion of the exhaust gas flow path 16 when in a closed position. As noted above, the vane 18 pivots toward the open position in response to pressure exerted by the exhaust gases on the vane 18 to minimize obstruction...

Abstract

The present invention relates to a vehicle exhaust system including various exhaust components. A passive valve assembly is associated with at least one exhaust component. The passive valve is resiliently biased toward the closed position, and the passive valve is movable toward the open position in response to an increase in exhaust pressure exceeding the spring biasing force. One aspect of the invention relates to the positioning of passive valves relative to other exhaust system components. Another aspect of the invention relates to passive valves in combination with packed resonators. Yet another aspect of the present invention relates to passive valves that include stop gaskets that facilitate noise reduction while improving valve performance and durability. Yet another aspect of the invention relates to the use of passive valves in a no-bypass configuration that have a high percentage of coverage when in the closed position. Another aspect of the invention relates to providing an offset passive valve arrangement in a vehicle exhaust system.

Description

[0001] related application [0002] This application is a divisional application of a Chinese patent application filed on November 18, 2008, with application number 200880001337.7 and title of invention "exhaust valve assembly". [0003] This application claims Provisional Application No. 60 / 989,508, filed November 21, 2007, US Patent Application 11 / 950,034, filed December 4, 2007, 969,936, U.S. Patent Application 11 / 953,930 filed December 11, 2007, U.S. Patent Application 12 / 013,652 filed January 14, 2008, and U.S. Patent Application 11 / 964,062 filed December 26, 2007 priority. technical field [0004] The present invention relates to a vehicle exhaust system, and more particularly to a valve assembly for a vehicle exhaust system. One aspect of the invention relates to the positioning of passive valves relative to other exhaust system components. Another aspect of the invention relates to a passive valve and resonator structure, and more particularly, to a passive valve co...
