The invention provides a method and system for locating a compartment of a coal conveyor. The system for locating the compartment of the coal conveyor comprises a camera, an industrial control computer and an alarm device, and the camera and the alarm device are respectively connected with the industrial control computer. After the coal conveyor stops, images of the compartment of the coal conveyor and the surrounding environment of the compartment are obtained, the compartment edge of the compartment of the coal conveyor is obtained through image analysis processing, and the compartment edge is compared with a pre-stored standard compartment edge to locate the compartment of the coal conveyor. The images of the compartment of the coal conveyor and the surrounding environment of the compartment collected after the coal conveyor stops are used as the main basis of locating the compartment of the coal conveyor, only one camera is needed for collecting locating data of the compartment of the coal conveyor, no error exits in the image collecting process, therefore, compared with the prior art, the locating system improves accurate locating on the compartment of the coal conveyor, and the locating system has the advantages of being simple and high in reliability.
