Embodiment Construction

[0018] In today's large data centers, network equipment is often covered in dense cabling, making it difficult for management and maintenance personnel to know which switch they are looking at and which port and device each cable end is connected to. For the same reason, tracking line changes (whether authorized or not) can be difficult, especially changes to redundant and backup links that may have no immediate operational impact but may later cause serious problems.

[0019] Automatic network management schemes known in the art typically rely on information obtained from higher layer protocols when discovering the physical connectivity of the network. Therefore, it may be difficult or impossible for the network management system to obtain physical connection information when the necessary higher layer protocols are not available. In addition, the system may not be able to distinguish between physical connectivity that actually exists in the physical layer and logical connect...

Abstract

The invention discloses efficient acquisition of connectivity information using cable identification. The communication device includes memory and a communication interface configured to send and receive messages to and from corresponding management agents in pieces of communication equipment having ports interconnected by cables in the network, each of said cables having a unique identification symbol. The processor is configured to communicate with the management agent through the communication interface to collect cable and port related physical connectivity information, store the physical connectivity information to memory, and provide the physical connectivity information to a user of the device.

Description

technical field [0001] This invention relates generally to computer and communication systems, and more particularly to cable infrastructure used in these systems. Background technique [0002] Large-scale modern data centers can have hundreds of racks of equipment filled with switches, networking devices, and computing nodes connected by thousands of cables, cumulatively spanning miles. Maintaining the infrastructure in such data centers presents significant challenges, not only the difficulty of ensuring that all cables are in and maintaining proper connections, but also the difficulty of identifying and repairing connections when they fail. [0003] A series of methods have been proposed to support automatic identification of cables by devices to which they are connected. For example, some types of cable terminations may contain a memory chip, such as an EEPROM chip, in which identifying information is stored in a form that can be automatically read by the connected devi...
