Problems solved by technology

[0004] Sometimes, the moving parts of the GAT can get stuck, which can interfere with the validity of the IOP test
In addition, the relatively long dwell time required for the contact tip to properly press against the cornea and thus the need to apply local anesthesia may increase patient discomfort and tissue safety concerns

Embodiment Construction

[0017] Originally referred to the attached drawings figure 1 with figure 2 , Shows a preferred embodiment of the applanation tonometer 1 without moving parts, which is suitable for providing health professionals with a measurement of the intraocular fluid pressure in the patient’s eye to assist in the diagnosis of glaucoma and other eye health problems, such as sclera hardness. The applanation tonometer 1 includes a prism assembly 3 at its proximal end, a laser module 5 at its distal end, and an intermediate beam splitter module 7 between the prism assembly 3 and the laser module 5. The prism assembly 3, the beam splitter module 7 and the laser module 5 are aligned with each other in the axial direction.

[0018] The prism assembly 3 of the applanation tonometer 1 includes a cone prism 9 (in Figure 4 with Figure 5 Best shown in), the cone prism 9 is made of glass, acrylic or other suitable light transmitting materials. The proximal end of the prism 9 is flattened to form a ro...

Abstract

An applanation tonometer (I) for measuring intraocular pressure (IOP) is provided, so that the health of a human or animal eye can be determined. The applanation tonometer (I) includes a prism (9) having a contact rip (10) at one end to be moved into contact with and lightly touched against the cornea of the eye. Incident laser light (76) is transmitted inwardly through the prism to the contact tip (10) at which some of the light (82) is decoupled and lost through the contact tip depending upon the area of contact between the contact tip arid the cornea. The remaining light (84) is reflected by the contact tip outwardly through the prism. A photo detector (64) which is responsive to the light (84) reflected by the contact tip (10) of the prism (9) and a force detector (44) which is responsive to the pressure at the area of contact between the contact tip and the cornea generate paired force and area data pairs that are processed to measure IOP.

Description

Technical field [0001] The present invention relates to an applanation tonometer for providing intraocular fluid pressure (IOP) measurement in the eye of a human or animal patient. The applanation tonometer disclosed herein has a device that responds to the contact force of the tonometer to the cornea and the contact area of the tonometer to the cornea to collect paired force and area data. The shortest residence time on the cornea and the least patient discomfort to accurately measure IOP. Background technique [0002] A tonometer is a non-invasive instrument that has been used to measure the pressure or tension of human or animal tissues. In the body, the intraocular fluid pressure (IOP) in the eye is measured to provide basic information for the diagnosis and treatment of glaucoma and related eye diseases. [0003] The ease of use, accuracy, and sterility of the tonometer are crucial in medical applications. One instrument known to provide highly accurate IOP measurement is...
