Embodiment approach

[0038] Clause 1. A method for a protective overlay for an airfoil, the method comprising:

[0039] applying the skin to the wing surface by wrapping the skin around the wing surface from the leading edge to the trailing edge of the wing, and

[0040] Wherein the skin covers about 50% to about 70% of the chord length of the airfoil.

[0041] Clause 2. The method of Clause 1, wherein the method further comprises making the skin from at least one polymer.

[0042] Clause 3. The method of Clause 1, wherein the method further comprises making the skin from the polyurethane protective strip.

[0043] Clause 4. The method of Clause 1, wherein the method further comprises fabricating the airfoil to have a monocoque carbon fiber construction.

[0044] Clause 5. The method of Clause 1, wherein the method further comprises printing an image on at least one side of the skin.

[0045] Clause 6. The method of Clause 1, wherein applying the skin to the airfoil surface is accomplished by b...

Abstract

The title of the invention is Protective Overlays for Wing Tip Devices. The present disclosure provides systems, methods, and apparatus for protective overlays for airfoils. In one or more embodiments, the disclosed method includes providing a skin and applying the skin to an airfoil surface. In one or more embodiments, the skin wraps the surface of the wing from the leading edge to the trailing edge of the wing. In at least one embodiment, the skin covers about 50% to about 70% of the chord length of the airfoil. In some embodiments, the skin is fabricated from at least one polymer, such as polyurethane and / or fluoropolymer. In one or more embodiments, the airfoil is a winglet, a canted wingtip and / or a wing panel.

Description

technical field [0001] The present disclosure relates to wingtip devices. In particular, it relates to protective overlays for wingtip devices. Background technique [0002] Aircraft wing leading edges and nose cones are susceptible to corrosion caused by debris and / or weathering. Therefore, protective molds or corrosion caps are currently used in the industry to protect the leading edge and nose cone of the airfoil from corrosion. For example, known polyurethane protective strips have been used on the leading edges of airfoils to protect them from corrosion. However, this is a flat strip, and it does not have the profile shape specific to an airfoil. At least one known aircraft includes a winglet with a protective film covering the leading edge of the winglet. Known corrosion caps comprise a profiled metal plate mechanically fastened to the leading edge of the airfoil. These corrosion caps extend back about ten percent (10%) of the chord length. Thus, the mechanical f...
