Embodiment Construction

[0032] The present invention relates to grommets for surgical implants that can be used to treat joint problems in the foot and / or hand. More specifically, in some embodiments, the surgical implant and one or more grommets may be used effectively in conjunction with each other to treat one or more joints in the foot or toe (e.g., the metatarsal joint in the toe). toe or interphalangeal joint).

[0033] Figure 1A is a side view of a portion of foot 10 with surgical implant 12 implanted therein. As shown, the surgical implant 12 includes one or more grommets (in Figure 1A Two are shown in ). The grommet 14 as disclosed in detail herein can be used with a variety of different surgical implants. For example, a suitable non-exclusive surgical implant 12 for use in the present invention may be as disclosed in (i) U.S. Patent No. 6,319,284 to Rushdy et al., and assigned to Futura Biomedical LLC; (ii) to Ogilvie et al. , and U.S. Patent No. D490,900, assigned to Ascension Ortho...

Abstract

A grommet (214) for use with a surgical implant (212) comprises a base and a sleeve. The base can be positioned around a portion (226) of the surgical implant (212). Additionally, the sleeve is connected to the base and extends away from the base. The sleeve includes an inner surface having a non-circular shape to inhibit relative rotation between the grommet (214) and the surgical implant (212), and an outer surface (238) that is substantially cylinder-shaped. The outer surface (238) of the sleeve can taper as the sleeve extends away from the base. Additionally, the sleeve can include one or more anti- rotation features (240) that are positioned along the outer surface (238) of the sleeve to inhibit rotation between the grommet (214) and the bone into which the surgical implant (212) is implanted.

Description

[0001] related application [0002] This application claims priority to US Provisional Application Serial No. 61 / 605,379, filed March 1, 2012, and entitled "Grommets for Surgical Implants." Wherever permitted, the contents of US Provisional Application Serial No. 61 / 605,379 are hereby incorporated by reference. Background technique [0003] It is well known that some people have problems with one or more joints in their bodies, including the feet and / or hands. Treatment of this problem with the joint typically involves inserting a surgical implant into the joint to stabilize the joint while also allowing good joint mobility, good joint load transfer, and good joint purchase. Unfortunately, the treatment of this joint problem with surgical implants is not entirely satisfactory. Contents of the invention [0004] The present invention relates to a grommet for a surgical implant. In some embodiments, the grommet includes a base and a sleeve. The base can be positioned arou...
