Abstract

A fuel tank includes a structure and a membrane. The membrane extends vertically between and is attached to the top and bottom walls of the structure and extends generally between the first and second side walls of the structure. The membrane defines a plurality of through-holes operable to allow movement of liquid fuel therethrough. The membrane is flexible and includes a length measured between the top and bottom edges of the membrane that is greater than the height of the structure measured between the top and bottom walls of the structure. The flexibility of the diaphragm and the length of the diaphragm allow the diaphragm to flex and move to absorb the kinetic energy of the movement of the fuel within the body of the structure.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention generally relates to fuel tanks for vehicles. Background technique [0002] Fuel tanks store large amounts of fuel. When in motion, fuel stored in the fuel tank may move or slosh within the fuel tank. Vehicle fuel tanks typically include one or more baffles disposed within the fuel tank. The baffle is operable to break up slosh waves of fuel moving in the fuel tank, thereby reducing noise produced by the slosh waves contacting various walls of the fuel tank. Contents of the invention [0003] The present invention provides a fuel tank for a vehicle. A fuel tank includes a structure and a diaphragm. The structure includes a top wall, a bottom wall vertically arranged below the top wall, a first side wall extending between the top wall and the bottom wall, and a second side wall extending between the top wall and the bottom wall. The second side wall is arranged opposite to the first side wall. The membrane includes a top ed...
