Abstract

The present invention relates to a system and method for reducing carbon corrosion in a fuel cell system. Specifically, the disclosed systems and methods may be used to prevent the formation of propagating H2-air interfaces within fuel cell systems. In certain embodiments, the disclosed systems and methods may employ an electrochemical pump disposed in the cathode loop of the fuel cell system, the electrochemical pump configured to remove oxygen intrusion into the fuel cell system. In a further embodiment, pumps may be included in the anode and cathode loops of the fuel cell system, which circulate certain gases to prevent the formation of H2-air fronts in the system.
