Abstract

One embodiment is directed to a furnace for heating fibers. The furnace includes a plurality of walls forming a chamber and a supply structure located in the chamber between first and second ends of the chamber. The supply structure is in communication with the first heating system and is configured to introduce heated gas from the first heating system into the first portion of the chamber. The supply structure is in communication with the second heating system and is configured to introduce heated gas from the second heating system into the second portion of the chamber.

Description

[0001] Cross References to Related Applications [0002] This application claims the benefit of US Provisional Patent Application Serial No. 61 / 816,376, filed April 26, 2013, which is incorporated herein by reference. Background technique [0003] Oxidation furnaces are commonly used to create carbon fibers from precursors such as acrylic, pitch or cellulose fibers. One common processing method involves continuously pulling fiber segments of precursor material through one or more oxidation ovens. [0004] Each oxidation oven comprises a respective oxidation chamber in which the oxidation of the fiber length takes place. Each fiber segment may be drawn at a first end into a first oxidation furnace as a carbon fiber precursor and then passed through each oxidation furnace multiple times before exiting the last oxidation furnace as an oxidized fiber segment. Rollers and tensioning wheels are used to pull the fiber segments through the oxidation chamber of the furnace. Each oxi...
