Embodiment Construction

[0032] In accordance with the present invention, an exemplary embodiment of a DFE that utilizes an explicit adaptation method rather than an exhaustive search method to identify optimal DFE taps or feedback coefficients based on a peak-to-peak based criterion is presented. The explicit adaptation method provides a closed-form solution (ie, calculates optimal tap coefficient values directly rather than iteratively). Such a DFE follows the behavior of the model DFE defined in the PCIE3.0 specification.

[0033] back to reference figure 2 , a receiver-based model DFE extracts an analog output signal x from a continuous linear equalizer (CTLE) k , and output a balanced analog signal yk and digital signal y * k ,in:

[0036] and where, y k can be modeled as the summed differential output voltage of the DFE, y * k is modeled as a decision function output voltage, x k is modeled as a DFE differential input voltage, d 1 is modeled as a tap o...

Abstract

The invention provides methods and systems for providing the optimum decision feedback equalization (DFE) of high-speed serial data links. Computationally efficient methods and related systems, for use in a test and measurement instrument, such as an oscilloscope, optimize the performance of DFEs used in a high-speed serial data link by identifying optimal DFE tap values for peak-to-peak based criteria. The optimized DFEs comply with the behavior of a model DFE set forth in the PCIE 3.0 specification.
