Embodiment Construction

[0011] exist figure 1 with figure 2 A microwave heating device embodying features of the invention comprising a tubular waveguide applicator is shown in . The applicator 10 shown in this example consists of a single circular waveguide segment with a cylindrical outer wall 11 forming a heating chamber. However, the applicator may also consist of a series of individual circular waveguide segments connected end to end. The applicator 10 has a circular flange 12 at each end. Plastic or teflon ribs 14 extend radially inwardly from the inner surface of the metal waveguide wall. A plurality of ribs 14 extending along the length of the applicator 10 are spaced circumferentially around the inner circumference of the applicator. Plastic or Teflon ribs 14 are microwave transparent. The ribs extend radially inwardly at a distance sufficient to define a central aperture 16 through the heating chamber through which objects such as individual cylindrical articles or a continuous cylind...

Abstract

The present invention relates to a tubular obstructed choke waveguide applicator, in particular to a microwave heating device having a tubular waveguide applicator and a reaction choke blocker and a blocking choke to reduce leakage. Microwaves can be centered through the centering element to keep the object to be processed in the applicator. Objects such as individual cylindrical objects or a continuous cylindrical product stream advance along or opposite the direction of microwave propagation through the applicator. Stop-traps have a dielectric material coated with microwave energy that absorbs the leakage of microwave energy through the reaction choke blocker to allow large openings for large diameter objects. Waveguide applicator in TE 01 Mode runs to concentrate microwave heating energy along the outer circumference of the object.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates generally to microwave heating devices, and more particularly to waveguide applicators that utilize microwaves to heat or dry products. Background technique [0002] Microwaves are commonly used in industrial processes to heat or dry products. For example, US Patent No. 4,497,759 describes a waveguide system for dielectrically heating a rod-drawn crystalline polymer fed continuously along its centerline through a circular waveguide applicator. tm 01 pattern for concentrating heating along the centerline. The narrow waveguide applicator has an inner diameter of 95.6 mm, which limits its use to small diameter products such as drawn polymer rods. For a continuous heating and drying process (where individual products or product streams are fed continuously through the waveguide applicator), openings are provided at opposite (both) ends of the applicator for product entry and exit. However, microwave rays may also leak thro...
